Don’t let the bug bite

It is estimated that around 1,200 deaths in Scotland per year are attributable to winter viruses.  To tackle this issue and improve health outcomes for people living in Scotland, free flu vaccinations are available at GP practices to vulnerable people.

Barkers has handled an awareness-raising campaign on behalf of the Scottish Executive for the past few years to encourage uptake of the vaccination among people who are eligible for a free jab - people over 65 and people under 65 who are ‘at risk’.

Several routes are used to communicate the importance of having a jab to vulnerable people.  ITV This Morning's Dr Chris Steele has fronted the campaign for the last two years and was used to support media relations.

A promotion on Saga FM appealed to older listeners and, given bingo is a game traditionally popular with senior citizens, Carlton Bingo was invited to support the campaign through a special, flu-sponsored game and leaflet distribution to bingo players.

Third party organisations are used to communicate with the target audience, including Diabetes UK, British Lung Foundation, Asthma UK and Alzheimer Scotland and health trade publications are used to target health care workers.
